Introduction to CTCSOL tests (normal version)

The CTCSOL tests are standardised tests organised by Confucius Institute Headquarters/ Hanban. Based on the Standards for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, the tests evaluate skills based on five criteria, namely basic skills for teaching Chinese, methods for teaching Chinese, lesson organisation and classroom management, Chinese culture and cross-cultural communication and professional ethics and development. Candidates are thus evaluated if they are qualified as teachers of Chinese as a foreign language.

The CTCSOL tests are divided into two parts: written and interview. Once candidates have passed the written test, they may take part in the interview.

I.Written test

The test consists entirely of objective questions and is divided into three parts: basic skills, practical application and general skills. There are 150 questions in total, with 150 being the full mark and 90 being the pass mark. The test lasts 155 minutes (including 5 minutes to fill in the question card).

The test questions are primarily examples based. The examples come from a variety of actual teaching materials, including texts found in teaching materials, course syllabus and plans, lesson plans and diaries, extracurricular-activity plans, student homework and answers, Internet-based and multimedia teaching resources, academic papers and research reports, teachers’ stories and news.

II.Interview

Candidates who have passed the written test may undergo an interview, which is done in groups and focuses on how candidates adopt and design lesson plans, organise and execute the lesson, complete the lesson, communicate in the foreign language and support students. Meanwhile, the basic qualities of the candidates are examined, including communication skill, psychological quality and teaching attitude.

The interview combines a structured interview with simulation. A 30-minute preparation time is given. The interview lasts 25 minutes and covers four parts, namely lesson explanation, demonstration, Q&A and foreign-language skills. The interviewers will comprehensively evaluate candidates based on their performance. The interview has a full mark of 150.

Lesson explanation requires candidates to elaborate on lesson plans based on the materials they got from the draw. Lesson plans must contain lesson objective, contents, key points, challenges and steps. Demonstration requires candidates to give a lesson in a simulated classroom picking one or two lesson points from the lesson plans. Candidates are evaluated for their basic teaching skills, linguistic skills and analysis skills, classroom activities and management, teaching-method application and supplementary teaching-resources application. The Q&A is divided into Chinese and English and each with two questions. The Chinese questions cover areas such as lesson organisation and classroom management, Chinese culture and cross-cultural communication, professional ethics and development. The English questions covers lesson organisation and classroom management and Chinese culture and cross-cultural communication.
